Agnes Martin did not have babies. Eva Hesse did not have babies. Hesse was thirty six when she died. Perhaps she would have but it is impossible to know. Martin has said that she had been a mother many times over. This lifetime was a gift for her to be alone and paint.

Agnes Martin did not paint for nine years. Or maybe seven.

Underlying Perfection hangs on the wall across from the bed that is being written.

It is paint the color of canvas on canvas in a shape that spills off the stretcher to extend below as far as it does high. The left edge of the fabric pushes out in an irregular curve below the bars. The canvas covers the top and bottom planes of the stretchers perpendicular to the wall. The wood is visible on the left and right. The left has been painted silver. The right pink. There is a pink glow on the wall when the spell draws nigh.

Is that real they all ask.

Maybe Eva.
